What Is Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis?

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition where your immune system mistakes your thyroid as a pathogen and attacks it.

As a result, your thyroid under performs, creating less thyroid hormone than it should. This is a condition called hypothyroidism.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is one of the most common causes of hypothyroidism.

What Causes Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis?

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition. This means it’s a condition where your immune system mistakes a part of your own tissue as a pathogen. This is what causes the symptoms of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, but what triggers your immune system to attack your thyroid isn’t yet known.

However, we do know of certain factors which may put you at greater risk of developing Hashimoto’s disease. In particular, you may be at greater risk if you:

  • Are a woman
  • Have a family history of thyroid disorders
  • Are pregnant
  • Have high levels of iodine
  • Have been exposed to high levels of radiation

Symptoms Of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

The symptoms for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis are similar to those of hypothyroidism. If you’ve been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease may be the cause. Its symptoms include:

  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Migraines
  • Constipation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Memory loss
  • Vision problems
  • Hair loss
  • Joint stiffness

However, some instances of Hashimoto’s disease may manifest themselves with no symptoms at all. As well, because so many of these symptoms are common to other disorders, Hashimoto’s disease is notoriously difficult to diagnose.

Naturopathic Treatments For Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Have you been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis?

Or have you read the above symptoms, and related to them just a bit too close for comfort?

If so, Dr. Pat can help.

Dr. Pat’s naturopathic treatments focus on finding the root cause of your hypothyroidism. Whether it’s related to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or some other condition, Dr. Pat will work to uncover the cause.

From there, he’ll offer a naturopathic treatment protocol designed to address that cause. While suppressing your symptoms may make you feel more comfortable temporarily, they don’t address why those symptoms are occurring in the first place.
