What Is Hypothyroidism?

Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck. It’s just above your collarbone, and wraps around the sides of your windpipe.

This little gland is part of your body’s endocrine system. That means its primary job is to secrete hormones into your bloodstream.

Your body uses these hormones as chemical messengers to tell the different parts of your body what to do. Cortisol, insulin, adrenaline, testosterone, and estrogen are all examples of hormones your body uses.

In your thyroid’s case, the hormones it releases control your body’s:

  • Heart rate
  • Metabolism
  • Digestion
  • Mood
  • Muscle control
  • Bone maintenance

When your thyroid is producing hormones at the correct rate, all of the above processes should operate at an ideal level. However, certain conditions can cause your thyroid to either overproduce (hyperthyroidism) or underproduce (hypothyroidism).

What Causes Hypothyroidism?

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system mistakes your thyroid tissue as a pathogen and begins to attack it.

Other potential causes of hypothyroidism include:

  • The use of certain medications
  • A damaged or missing thyroid
  • Insufficient iodine levels
  • Pregnancy, or having been recently pregnant
  • A congenital thyroid defect
  • An issue with your pituitary gland
  • An issue with your hypothalamus
  • Exposure to radiation

We also know of a number of risk factors of developing hypothyroidism. In particular, the following puts you at greater risk:

  • Having other autoimmune disorders
  • Having Down syndrome
  • Having Turner syndrome
  • Being a woman
  • Being of European or Asian descent
  • Having a family history of thyroid disorders
  • Being older
  • Having prematurely grey hair

What Are The Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism?

If you’re dealing with hypothyroidism, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Depression
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Dry hair and skin
  • Hair loss
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Unexplained weight gain

Naturopathic Treatments For Hypothyroidism

Have you been diagnosed with hypothyroidism? Or do you believe you may have it?

If so, Dr. Pat can help.

Naturopathic medicine focuses on finding the root cause of your hypothyroidism, rather than simply addressing your symptoms. By addressing this root cause, you can find relief from your symptoms while at the same time helping your body heal itself.

Hypothyroidism is a frustrating and difficult condition to live with. However, if left unchecked, it can lead to significant complications. In particular, it can lead to cognitive decline, decreased lung function, heart disease, and goiter.

In rare cases, a severe and untreated case of hypothyroidism can lead to a condition called myxedema. With myxedema, your thyroid hormones fall so low that you slip into a coma. This condition has a 50% mortality rate.

So, it’s important to seek treatment for your hypothyroidism.
